Filmmaking in Kyoto

There are two movie studios in Kyoto. One is Shochiku Kyoto Movie Studios, another one is Toei Kyoto Movie Studios.
Both studios are focused on samurai filmmaking. I know some movies in the world are serious, designed to make the audience think. But many of samurai movies, which were made in Kyoto studios are designed primarily to amuse and entertain.
Japanese people especially senior people love samurai movie because themes of samurai films are usually one of love versus duty and good versus evil.
On the other hand, samurai films are using Japanese traditional arts and culture including sword action. Nowadays, one of the purpose of making samurai film is to keep and develop Japanese movie heritage in Kyoto.
If you are interested in samurai filmmaking, Kyoto Filmmakers' Lab will be a great experiece for you. We will update entry 2009 soon. If you have any questions, please let us know.
